As a driver in the state of Rhode Island, safety should always be on your mind, especially at four-way intersections.

The Colin B. Foote Act of 2010 addresses this concern by trying to put an end to fatal accidents on the roads.

Details

According to ColinsLaw.Org, the official website for the nonprofit organization, this measure helps to prevent habitual traffic offenders from severely harming others. After a speeding driver with multiple prior violations ran a red light and killed Colin Foote, legislators passed this statute in order to prevent any other similar accidents.

Importance

Before this law took effect, drivers could pay tickets and fines by mail. This allowed many to slip undetected from officials and continue driving, so long as they paid on time. With Colin’s Law, anyone with four or more moving violations within an 18 month period may have their license revoked for a year or more.

These violations include speeding, missing traffic lights, unsafely overtaking other vehicles, and failing to stop at a stop sign. Aggressive driving and following other cars too closely also count as moving offenses.

Fines and training

This law impacts all drivers in the state of Rhode Island. If you repeatedly violate traffic laws, you could receive a sentence of up to $1,000 or attend a remedial driving class.

These classes typically require 60 hours of retraining instruction in order to complete them. It is also a requirement to perform 60 hours of community service as part of your conviction. Learning more about how Colin’s Law can impact your driving habits can help prevent any accidents in the future.
